Historic Facts about Moana Surfrider Hotel Honolulu

  • It was the first hotel in Waikiki, opening its doors to guests on March 11, 1901 โ€“ a date that marked the beginning of tourism in Waikiki.

  • The Moana Hotel, as it was originally called, had 75 guest rooms. Private baths, telephones, and the first electric-powered elevator in Hawaii โ€“ the ultimate luxuries at the time.

  • By 1927, the Moana was the popular choice for visitors who started to flock to Waikiki to experience new attractions like the Honolulu Zoo and the Waikiki Natatorium War.

  • The Moana got another boost in 1934 when Harry Owens and his band put Hawaiian music on the map with their world-famous radio show Hawaii Calls. The show was broadcast from the Moanaโ€™s courtyard.

  • World War II and the bombing of Pearl Harbor temporarily put a damper on the holiday spirit at the Moana Hotel. However, it was used by sailors and soldiers as a place of rest and recreation. It was often the last or the first place they stopped on their way to or back from war.

  • A new era arrived for the Moana after 1969 when it was sold to the Sheraton and amalgamated with the adjacent Surfrider Hotel to become the Moana Surfrider.

  • Since 2007, the Moana Surfrider Hotel Honolulu is a Westin Resort and Spa. It now has 552 guest rooms and 36 suites in three wings: the historic Banyan wing, the Diamond Wing, and the Tower Wing.

  • The Moana Surfrider is a member of Historic Hotels of America and listed in the United Stateโ€™s National Register of Historic Places.

  • Tip: A guided historical tour of the Moana Surfrider is held every Monday and Wednesday. Brochures for self-guided tours are also available near the Historical Room on the 2nd floor of the Banyan Wing.
