Desroches Island is one of 115 islands belonging to the Republic of Seychelles. After visiting the Seychelles islands of Mahรฉ and Silhouette, I didnโ€™t think Iโ€™d find more Seychelles resorts to take my breath away. I was wrong. Desroches Island and its only resort, the Four Seasons Desroches, are right up there with the best Seychelles resorts.

Fast Facts About Desroches Seychelles

  • Desroches Island is 140 miles southwest of Victoria, the capital of Seychelles on Mahรฉ island. With a circumference of 9 miles, itโ€™s the main island of the Amirante Islands, which are part of the group of outer islands of Seychelles.

  • The island got its current name (Lโ€™ile des Roches in French) in 1771 in honor of Franรงois Julien des Roches, governor of Mauritius and Rรฉunion. Before this, British explorers named Desroches Wood Island due to its dense vegetation.

  • Unlike the main islands of Seychelles with their granite boulders and forested hills, Desroches is a low lying coral island.

  • Most of Desroches Island Seychelles is covered in coconuts, which are exported. Timber production is the other main economic activity.

  • The Four Seasons Desroches and a small Creole village (where resort staff and other people working on the island stay) are the only settlements on Desroches Seychelles. This epitome of Seychelles resorts opened its doors in 2016 after taking over and completely upgrading the former resort which existed since 1972.

Top Things To See And Do On Desroches Island Seychelles

  • Relax on a secluded beach โ€“ You can explore 9 miles of sandy beaches. Most of the time, youโ€™ll be completely alone to enjoy the tropical paradise in silence and solitude. Not many Seychelles resorts can offer their guests this kind of private island experience.

  • Go Diving โ€“ Plunge into the Indian Ocean where the turquoise lagoon waters meet the deep, blue sea. There are no less than 14 world-class diving sites around Desroches Island, making Four Seasons Desroches one of the top Seychelles resorts among dive enthusiasts.

  • Visit the Tortoise Sanctuary โ€“ Desroches Seychelles is home to the Aldabra giant tortoise which is on the endangered species list. They are protected in a conservation area run by the Island Conservation Society. You can feed them herbs or fruit and even touch them. Best still is to swim with them!

  • Enjoy the View from The Lighthouse โ€“ The lighthouse on Desroches Seychelles is the perfect place to unwind even further at the end of the day. You can climb to the top for amazing sea and island views or have a sundowner in the cocktail lounge. Afterwards, The Lighthouse will treat you to seafood and grilled meats in their beach restaurant.
