Following the floating islands and the one-of-a-kind skyline of Hong Kong, we enjoyed the next two nights of our Chiang Mai honeymoon at the elegant retreat of the Anantara Chiang Mai Resort. The hotel is located on the banks of the renowned Mae Ping River and has all the pleasures of resort living in the heart of the historical city.

Chiang Mai, known by locals as the “Rose of the North” in Thailand for its beauty and charm, offers unforgettable combination of adventure, culture, and relaxation. Founded in 1296, Chiang Mai is a cultural and religious center and a home to hundreds of Buddhist temples. Our Chiang Mai honeymoon trip was only 3 days but we did manage to see the Waroros Market, the Wat Phra Singh, the Wat Phra That Doi Suthep, the night bazaar, and to get a couples massage.

Many locals know the market as “Kard Luang” which translates as “market owned by a royal”. Waroros was co-founded by Princess Dararasmi and Prince Intaraworos over a century ago. No longer owned by royalty, today’s market (which opens at 6am) is the best destination in the city to find typical Northeastern produce such as Isaan sausage, crispy pork, and Northern-style clothing and textiles.

You can take a trishaw ride along the famous Tapae Road through the ancient city walls and along Rajdamnern Road to Wat Phra Singh, one of Chiang Mai’s most revered and famous temples. The Buddhist Temple is dominated by an enormous, mosaic-inlaid wí·hăhn (sanctuary). Built in 1345, the Wihan Lai Kham building houses the sacred Phra Buddha Singh statue (the Lion Buddha), the main attraction at the temple. The ancient complex is very impressive site with gilded rooftops and golden chedis. Wat Phra Singh is also a living and working temple and very much part of the local community with a monastery and school contained within the grounds.

Wat Phra That Doi Suthep rests on Doi Suthep Mountain. Constructed in 1384, the temple is located 3,500 feet above sea level and is considered the most important temple in Chiang Mai. Local legend claims the temple was built after a bone of Buddha was carried up Doi Suthep Mountain on the back of a white elephant, who trumpeted three times before dying on the site. This was interpreted as a sign and King Nu Naone ordered the construction of the temple that stands today.

The temple is reached by climbing 309 steps, but should you wish to avoid climbing the stairway a tram is also available for a small additional cost. As well as some striking examples of architecture, Wat Phra That Doi Suthep also offers exceptional sunset views over Chiang Mai. While at the exquisite temple you will be able to make merit if you so choose, and in return receive a blessing from one of the senior monks. Once the sun has set you will have the wonderful opportunity to experience the temple’s monks perform their evening prayers.

Following our Chiang Mai honeymoon, we headed to the Golden Triangle Elephant Camp which was definitely one of the most exciting parts of our trip.
