And for your physical health, physical activity can reduce your risk of cardiovascular disease, type 2 diabetes, and certain types of cancers.
Exercise looks different for everybody, so it’s important to find what works best for your body and lifestyle. If you aren’t used to working out, start small. Drink More Water!
How much water do you actually drink every day? It can be hard to drink enough water throughout the day, but you can probably tell when you don’t get enough. Drinking enough water each day is a vital, healthy habit for your body. You’ve probably heard the general eight cups of water each day rule, but that isn’t always the case. So, how much water do you need to drink each day?
According to Harvard Health Publishing, there isn’t necessarily a set amount. Each person’s health and lifestyle will determine the amount of water they need. It’s important to factor in things like age, exercise, how often you sweat, and specific health conditions. Water isn’t the only way to hydrate throughout the day. Other beverages and foods hydrate your body too! But they definitely shouldn’t replace drinking plenty of water.
A study done by the Mayo Clinic says, “The U.S. National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine determined that an adequate daily fluid intake is about 15.5 cups (3.7 liters) of fluids a day for men and about 11.5 cups (2.7 liters) of fluids a day for women.”
Drinking enough water is an important part of taking care of your body. Your body depends on water to survive! Without enough water, you will become dehydrated, feel tired, and have low energy. If your body doesn’t have the water it needs, it can’t function properly, and eventually, your organs will begin to shut down.
“Water is your body’s principal chemical component and makes up about 50% to 70% of your body weight.” – Mayo Clinic
If you struggle to drink enough water throughout the day, you aren’t alone! Remembering to drink water during a busy day can be difficult, but it’s an important form of self-care. Try implementing some of these tips to help you stay hydrated throughout the day!
- Purchase a water bottle that tracks how much water you drink each day. This super sleek HidrateSpark Pro smart water bottle tracks your water intake and glows when it’s time to drink more water! Available in five colors, this smart water bottle is BPA-free and lets you track your water intake through an app to help you stay hydrated all day!
- If one of the highlights of your day is checking things off of your to-do list, set calendar reminders throughout the day to drink more water!
- Keep a bottle of water on your nightstand to enjoy as soon as you wake up each morning.
While it’s so important to stay hydrated throughout the day, it is possible to drink too much water. Check out this hydration calculator to get a better idea of how much water you should drink each day. However, if you have specific concerns or questions, speak with your doctor to learn what amount of water is best for you each day.
Spend 20 Minutes Each Day Cleaning or Organizing
Your home should be a place of refuge. It’s a safe place where you can come home to relax and unwind. But how often do you come home after a long day to a cluttered mess? Spending just 20 minutes each day cleaning or organizing can do wonders for the state of your home and for your mental health, and taking care of your mind is just as important as taking care of your body.
If you are a morning person, set aside time for cleaning or organizing each morning. Tackle a junk drawer that causes you stress every time you open it or fold and put away the laundry piled up on your bedroom chair. If you are more of an evening person, clean up the clutter before you go to bed so that you can wake up to a clutter-free home. Clean the kitchen, run the dishwasher, or pick up and organize the kids’ toys lying around.
While cleaning or organizing might not feel like a form of self-care, it is. Seeing the benefits of that 20 minutes of cleaning or organizing will give you a sense of accomplishment. While you can’t control everything in your busy schedule, you can control the state of your home. Do Something That Makes You Happy!
While it’s so easy to let the demands of life fill your daily schedule, make sure you take time to do something that makes you happy! While stress is a natural reaction to certain aspects of life, too much stress can harm your health. So even if it’s just a 15-minute break on a busy day, take time to do something that brings you joy!
Make time at the end of a busy day to completely relax. Stop answering emails and just do something for yourself. Watch your favorite television show while enjoying a glass of wine or snuggle up on the couch with your favorite book and escape for a while. Or, plan a family dinner or grab lunch with a friend. If you have a longer break in the day, schedule a pedicure or a massage.
Taking time for yourself is important for your mental health and physical health. It’s important to remember that self-care looks different for everyone. There isn’t a right or wrong, just what works for you. So the next time you find yourself feeling overwhelmed and stressed, make time to do something that brings you joy!
